Growing Season Notes
Winter
- Pruning currant and gooseberry bushes.
- Planting new raspberry plants and bushes.
- Erecting raspberry support wires.
- Straw or farmyard manure mulch around base of bushes.
- Planting broad beans.
- Hand weeding.
Spring
- Protect some strawberries with fleece sheet to make them fruit early.
- Planting new strawberry plantation.
- More hand weeding
- Erect fences to keep rabbits out.
- Straw in raspberry alleyways to suppress weeds and for clean walking.
Summer
- Lay straw around strawberry plants to prevent rain splash of soil on to berries.
- Prepare adverts for newspapers.
- Fruit ripening.
- Once strawberry picking has finished the leaves are cut off to expose the crowns to encourage fresh growth in preparation for the next season.
Winter
- Prune raspberries to remove old cane and tie in new cane ready for next season.
- Apply farmyard manure and plough area to be planted with new strawberries next spring.
- Hand weeding.
